W.D. Snodgrass was born in 1926 in Wilkinsburg,
Pennsylvania. He served in the Navy during World War II and studied poetry
under Robert Lowell at the University of Iowa's writers' workshop. He won
the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for his first collection of poems, Heart's
Needle (1959). He is currently Professor Emeritus at the university
of Delaware.
