Grading School Lunches

LiveFIT NH is a new NHPTV community engagement project that encourages healthy eating and physical activity in children and adults. With its partner organizations statewide, LiveFIT NH demonstrates - through television segments, education and outreach activities, and online resources - how individuals, families, schools and communities can combat childhood obesity trends so all Granite Staters can live fit and well.

NH Outlook segments show everyone how to start walking the path to wellness.

Outlook LiveFIT NH Segments

  • Grading School Lunches
Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions. In New Hampshire, an estimated 20% of children are overweight or obese. In this segment we examine the role that schools play in children's wellness and what we can all do to help in that effort. Outlook's Phil Vaughn explores some of the innovative ways schools are getting students to think about what they eat.

  • Brown Bag Snack Tips
Time is at a premium these days. So how do you pack healthy snacks and lunches? What will children actually eat? In this segment, Portsmouth author and registered dietician, Eileen Behan shows us how to make sure your brown bag packs a healthy punch.

  • CircusFit and Physical Education in Schools
Physical education and fun can be synonomous. Phil Vaughn examines the role of schools in promoting activity in children. He also explores the fun-damentals of clowning around with the circus!

  • Reading Food Labels
Sometimes health claims made on the label of a food product are just that: claims. Nutritionist Eileen Behan shows us how to read the fine print.

  • Eating Well
Sometimes it takes a health crisis to change eating habits. In this story, Phil Vaughn shows us how one family learned to make changes that worked to everyone's benefit.

  • Heart Disease
Heart disease kills more people in NH than anything else and it affects people of all ages and genders. Last fall, a Berlin teenager suffered cardiac arrest while playing football and recently a 46-year-old Barrington mother had a heart attack, which was attributed to dangerously high cholesterol levels. In this LiveFIT NH report, hear heart disease survival stories and learn ways to protect yourself and your family from the disease.

  • Eating Well on the Run: Making Healthy Fast Food Choices
There's no doubt about it. Fast food restaurants are a billion dollar business for a reason. People need to eat on the run. Fast food has been criticized for its high fat and low nutrition count. But a meal on the go doesn't have to be all that bad for you as we learn in this segment with Portsmouth author and nutritionist Eileen Behan.

  • LiveFIT with Type 2 Diabetes
The incidence of Type 2 Diabetes cases is on the rise. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) an estimated 50% of children with this dangerous chronic disease are going undiagnosed. Obesity and lifestyle choices are a contributing factor of the disease, but enacting healthy changes can make a difference. In this LiveFIT NH report, Producer Phil Vaughn shows us how a mother and daughter are coping with the diagnosis.

  • No More Diets
Many experts are saying your best bet for losing weight and keeping it off is not to diet at all. It's to change your entire relationship with food.
Outlook's Phil Vaughn has the story in this month's LiveFIT NH report. You may be wondering how to begin to build a better relationship with food at home. Registered dietician and author Eileen Behan shows us some simple steps to take now.
  • The Media's Influence on Healthy Eating
How often do you think about the impact that the media has on your health? Chances are not as often as you should be. In today's world, advertisements can be found almost anywhere... on the websites we visit, in the magazines we read, and especially in the TV we watch. So how do we teach ourselves, and our children, to pay better attention to the food we're consuming? It starts with understanding our consumption of media. Phil Vaughn takes a closer look.
  • Food Security in New Hampshire
A recent study in New Hampshire says that a third of the state's children are overweight or obese. Getting children outside and exercising is a good way to counter that trend. But an equally important part of the process is altering children's diets to include more healthy foods, like fruit and vegetables. That's not always easy for families on a budget. In this story, Phil Vaughn introduces us to the term "food secure."
  • Take the Challenge
When we launched the LiveFit NH series in the fall of 2006, we challenged families throughout the state to change their lifestyle; it's called the LiveFit Challenge. Two of the keys to living fit are adopting a balanced diet and getting routine exercise. One family from Manchester did just that when they took the LiveFit Challenge this past year. Meet the Barkers, of Manchester.
  • For the Love of Food Dinner party
Eating healthy isn't always easy. In fact, alot of times it can be really hard. But there are ways to continue eating the types of food that you love without having to completely alter your diet. In this Special Edition of NH Outlook, Registered Dietician Eileen Behan, invites us to attend a dinner party at her house in Rye. As Eileen shows her house guests, there are many easy ways to make everything from your appetizers to dessert alot more healthy. And you might be surprised at some of the things you can get away with eating.
  • Mindless Eating
If you've ever gone into a sub shop, ordered a low fat sandwich and left with a brownie, chips and soda you're not alone. Most of us make hundreds of food decisions every day and those choices can lead to over-eating. Outlook's Phil Vaughn has more on the concept of Mindless Eating and how to avoid it.
  • Aging and Exercise
It seems the older we get, the younger we want to be. Doctors now say they know what keeps us young. It is exercise. It lowers the risk of disease, keeps the body strong and helps slow down the biological clock. Outlook's Phil Vaughn has the story.
  • Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention
Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Stroke is third on the list. Those two leading health problems take the lives of 15-hundred New Hampshire women every year. Outlook's Beth Carroll profiles two local women with surprising stories about heart disease and stroke.
