NH Outlook Special Presentation: Speaking of Health
Guest host Allison McNair talks with Dr. Bill Thomas, an internationally recognized geriatric specialist and author. Dr. Thomas speaks provocatively about how societies view aging and how those views can change for the better.
Dr. Thomas also discusses some of the issues facing older Americans such as isolation, sexuality and being active.
Viewer Comments
Dr. Thomas reiterated the need for improved services for the elderly, but I am not sure how practical it is to promote the status of nursing home hands on staff-the aides. That requires higher salaries and something NH is not famous for raising taxes for services. The crises is that caregivers are primarily middle aged women with full time jobs, teenagers and their own health problems. Mary Pipher wrote a great book that addresses these immense issues titled "Another Country". The issues around dementia are very different than those around the young respecting elder wisdom. I would like to have heard more realistic solutions.
