Veterans

Do you know someone who is veteran of World War I, World War II, the Korean, Vietnam and/or Persian Gulf wars?

Perhaps you contributed to the war effort as a civilian?

Veterans and civilians who worked in support of these wars are encouraged to share their stories with The Veterans History Project. The Veterans History Project is collecting stories and materials from the homefront as well as the battlefield. Your interview will become part of the permanent historical record of our nation.

The United States Congress created the Veterans History Project in 2000. The authorizing legislation (Public Law 106-380) received unanimous support and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on October 27, 2000.The Library of Congress's Veterans History Project is committed to honoring veterans and collecting their stories. Stories may be recorded with a video camera or tape recorder; they may also be type written. Also accepted will be original collections of diaries, letters, maps, home movies, and photographs. The Project cannot collect artifacts, such as medals, canteens, dog tags, helmets or uniforms.

While the Veterans History Project does not do the actual interviewing, you are encouraged to conduct an interview yourself, or have a friend or family member do it with you. The Project Kit includes all of the information and forms you need to participate.Since the project is on-going, there is no deadline for submitting materials. Once your materials are received, they will be preserved and made available to the public through the American Folklife Center Reading Room . Selected examples of the collection will also be available on their website, and in coming years they will develop educational materials for the public. The free Project Kit is available online. You may also order a printed version by sending email to: vohp@loc.gov

Groups are encouraged to participate in the Veterans History Project. Libraries, museums, and civic groups can start their own local projects. Veterans associations, military and history organizations, institutes of higher education, and ongoing veterans oral history projects can become Official Partners of the Veterans History Project, at which point their names and addresses will be added to the List of Official Partners. Teachers and students, participants in after-school programs and youth groups may become Official Youth Partners. Please contact the Veterans History Project directly at 207-707-4916 or email vohp@loc.gov. Visit their website for more information.
