Fifteenth Annual Reading Rainbow Contest

The Magnificent Mantis

When we got home, we put the oothecae in our refrigerator. If we didn't, the oothecae would get too warm and hatch. Because it was winter, the baby mantises would get cold and die.

On April 15, we took the oothecae out of the fridge to warm up and hatch. We checked on them every day hoping they would hatch. But they didn't.
Finally on June 8th, they hatched! When my mom came home she saw lots of tiny mantises crawling out of the oothecae. She put them in our butterfly pavilion. Then she brought them to my class and showed them to me and my classmates.

They looked like mini toys. They were pale yellow. Later, they started turning green. There were about 400 mantises.
