Peroryctidae - New Guinea bandicoots, rainforest bandicoots

There are 11 species in this family of marsupials. They are found in Australia, Indonesia, and New Guinea. Most species are found in the rainforest. They have small, compact bodies; cone-shaped heads; long tails; and strong front claws. Species in this family include: Clara's echymipera, David's echymipera, Menzies's echymipera, Kalubu echymipera, the long-nosed echymipera, the striped bandicoot, the mouse bandicoot, the Papuan bandicoot, the giant bandicoot, Raffray's bandicoot, and the Ceram bandicoot.
