Ailuridae - Red Panda

Classification

 Kingdom: Animalia
 Phylum: Chordata
 Class: Mammalia
 Order: Carnivora
 Family: Ailuridae
red pandaThere is only one species in this family, the red panda.

The red panda is about the size of a domestic cat. It is found in the forested mountain slopes of southern Asia.

The red panda looks more like a raccoon than a panda. It has soft, reddish-brown fur; a black belly and legs; a white face with white stripes that run from its eyes down to its jaw; and a long, bushy tail with brown rings. It has round eyes, pointed ears edged in white, and a pointed snout with a round black nose.

A large part of the red panda's diet is made up of bamboo, but it also eats roots, berries, acorns, insects, and sometimes eggs and young birds. The red panda is a solitary animal and spends much of its time curled up in a ball and resting in a tree branch.
