Plecoptera - stoneflies

There are around 2,000 species in this order and over 400 species in North America. The species in this order are found in cool, temperate habitats near fast-moving rivers and streams. Adult stoneflies have long antennae and long cerci (rear antennae). Adult stoneflies have wings, but they usually stay on the banks of streams and rivers and eat algae or lichen. In some species, the adults don't have mouths and die shortly after mating. The larvae live under stones in the water.
