COMMUNITY OUTREACH GOALS
One in 10 persons over the age of 65, and nearly half of those over the age of 85, have Alzheimer's disease. According to the Alzheimer's Association of New Hampshire and Vermont, an estimated 20,000 individuals in New Hampshire suffer from Alzheimer's (November 2002). More than 7 out of 10 people with Alzheimer's live at home, with nearly 75 % of the home care provided by family and friends — including spouses who may be aging and frail. For every person diagnosed, Alzheimer's also affects caregivers, family and friends. An estimated 80,000 people in the Granite State live with — and suffer from — Alzheimer's.
New Hampshire PBS is playing an important educational role by providing links to community groups and information sources to help citizens be better prepared to deal with this coming epidemic.
NHPTV has partnered with the Alzheimer's Association of Vermont and New Hampshire, New Hampshire ServiceLink Network, Seniors Count/Easter Seals of New Hampshire, and the New Hampshire Library Association to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease and foster community discussion in conjunction with the broadcast of The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer's.
The goals for New Hampshire PBS's community engagement initiatives include:
- Raising awareness of Alzheimer's disease in New Hampshire;
- Encouraging youth and baby boomers to communicate openly about the realities of Alzheimer's and care-giving issues related to family and community life; and
- Raising awareness about the need for trained volunteer caregivers throughout the state.
NHPTV is one of 30 public television stations to be awarded a grant from MetLife Foundation, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through Twin Cities Public Television, with matching grant funds provided by the Massachusetts-based Doris L. Benz Trust. The funds support community outreach activities in conjunction with the broadcast of The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s.
