Organize a Neighborhood Clean-up Day
Choose a Saturday (when there is no snow) to clean up your community or a neighborhood section of your town.
Work with your local fire department, community center, or public school and use them as the central meeting place.
Arrange for trucks to haul the filled bags of litter to the dump or recycling center.
Set the time of the clean-up, perhaps from 10 a.m. to noon.
Have all participants gather to get their assigned location. Give each person a large, heavy-duty plastic bag for collecting litter. Try to get a local store or stores to donate the bags. Suggest that people wear work gloves to protect their hands.
Encourage people to separate the litter-i.e., cans, glass, paper and cardboard, plastic and Styrofoam containers-to be recycled. In families, each person's bag can hold a different category of item.
When their assigned area is all cleaned up, have participants bring their full bags back to the central meeting place.
If possible, end the clean-up day with a barbeque or potluck lunch.
Have fun.
