Music

musicMusic is all around us, and it is sometimes found in unusual places. Bird songs, the rhythmic pounding of a hammer, the humming of your refrigerator, the dripping of a faucet, the honking a car horn. All of these are examples of "music" in your everyday life.

Olivia Forms a Band by Ian Falconer (ages 4-8)
Olivia's family is going to watch the fireworks. Her mother is packing a picnic. Olivia is disappointed when she learns there won't be a marching band. She tries to recruit her family, but all refuse so she decides to make her own one-pig-band. End of story? No way. This tale has as many twists as Olivia's and Falconer's hilarious illustrations too.

Play, Mozart, Play! by Peter Sis
Mozart lived music all his life. This brief, beautifully illustrated biography gives young readers a look at the world and imagination of a little boy who was always practicing.

Catalina Magdalena Hoopensteiner Wallendiner Hogan Logan Bogan Was Her Name
by Tedd Arnold (Grades 3-5)
This version of a familiar camp song will inspire even the most reluctant singers. With Catalina's endless name as a refrain and her comical attributes-big feet, rubbery limbs, and "two holes in the bottom of her nose, one for fingers and one for toes," all will be amused. Arnold's illustrations provide comic perspective.

I Hear America Singing: Folksongs for American Families by Kathleen Krull and Allen Garns (Grades 3-5)
This collection contains 62 folk songs from every region of the country. You will find work songs, spirituals, protest songs, and songs just for fun. One index separates the songs into 23 types, including animal songs, ballads and story songs, and blues. Each comes with sheet music and its complete lyrics. A CD with 23 of the songs is included.
